There are many benefits to be gained by continuing regular exercise in a normal healthy pregnancy.
Studies show that regular exercise has a positive psychological impact on a mother and has no risk in terms of the foetus and birth outcome ( J Rankin 2002)
Ante and Pre Natal Pilates classes improve core stability, balance and co-ordination, increase awareness of pelvic floor muscles and the role they play in labour. You will achieve good breath control and relaxation techniques. These lessons will also help restore your figure after birth. The babies of mothers who regularly exercise tend to be more alert and easier to care for.
CAUTION : If you have been regularly attending my Pilates classes, you can carry on in your regular class with appropriate adaptations.
WE ALWAYS STOP EXERCISING BETWEEN WEEKS 8-14. only as a precautionary measure as this is a danger zone for miscarriage. (Usually it is never caused by anything the mother has done).
For new clients I do not teach them before 16 weeks when their pregnancy is well established. A doctors written permission is a prerequisite to join these classes.
After 16 weeks we do not lie flat on our backs when exercising and are cautious with range of movement. Now is not the time to increase flexibility but sustain it.
Above all relax and enjoy this special time. It takes 9 months to have a baby allow yourself 9 months to recover.
